OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Building Transformation—inside and out
We, the workers of the Penn Museum, are dedicated to positive transformation. As physical improvements change the spaces where we work, we recognize the need for a deeper structural change to how we work, with each other and the community. This is why we want to form a union. The Museum has made a commitment to “tackle barriers to equity for our staff, public, and research and community partners.” For this to be truly possible we need:
More employee involvement in Museum decisions. When we have a say in the decisions that impact Museum workers, we will be more invested in the outcomes.
Improved communication between departments. When communication and collaboration are prioritized, we can build community and better understand our colleagues’ and the Museum’s needs.
Fair wages, realistic expectations, and job stability. When the Museum supports priorities by giving all employees the tools we need to succeed, respect for our professional expertise, fair compensation for the work we do, and protection from losing our jobs without warning, we will be a stronger, and more sustainable workplace.
Dialogue and action. When the Museum creates a space for discussing social issues and offers a platform for untold stories, we can become allies for our neighbors, both locally and globally.
We, the workers, are the stewards of the collections and are dedicated to the Museum’s mission of uncovering the diverse stories of our shared humanity. Our own diversity of voices can only make the Museum stronger. Forming a union will give us a solid foundation on which to build the Penn Museum our community needs—inside and out.
